Colour Psychology & Emotional Home Energetics: Designing for Who We Are, Not What’s Trending

I’ve always believed that our homes should reflect who we are at a soul level — not just what’s trending on Pinterest. Colour, in particular, holds a power that is often overlooked. It’s not just about what looks good. It’s about what feels right. When we choose colour based on trends, we often bypass our emotional needs. But when we tune into what we truly need to feel supported, calm, energised, or grounded, the colours we surround ourselves with begin to carry deeper meaning.

This is where colour psychology and emotional home energetics come together. As someone who works closely with colour and interiors, I see first-hand how the right colour can change the way a person feels in their space. Colour psychology teaches us how different hues impact our mood, nervous system, and even our behaviour. Emotional home energetics reminds us that every object, shade, and layout in our space holds energy. Together, they shape how we experience our home — and ourselves.

Designing Through the Lens of Life Stages

Our emotional needs change throughout our lives, and so should our homes. What supported you in your twenties likely won’t feel the same in your forties. For example, a soft green might have once been a refreshing burst of newness, but later in life, a deeper olive or clay-based neutral might offer the grounded calm you now crave. Designing in alignment with your life stage means pausing to ask: what do I most need to feel in this room?

This is especially true during moments of transition. Whether it’s motherhood, grief, burnout, or rebirth, your home can become a space that helps you regulate and heal. Colour becomes a companion in this process — not a backdrop. A burnt orange may re-ignite creativity. A soft lavender may soothe your senses. A deep navy might offer quiet containment when the outside world feels too much.

Supporting Children Through Colour

One of the areas where colour is most misunderstood is in children’s spaces. Somewhere along the way, minimalism took over, and greys and beiges found their way into nurseries and playrooms. But children are developing beings — emotionally, cognitively, and energetically. They thrive in spaces that stimulate imagination, curiosity, joy and play.

Colour supports this development. Blues can support focus. Yellows spark joy and confidence. Greens offer calm, while reds and oranges (in balance) invite playfulness and vitality. Steering away from dull, lifeless palettes in children’s spaces isn’t just a design preference — it’s a developmental support tool. When we bring intentional colour into their environments, we’re saying: I see you. I support your growth and I honour your spirit.

Start With How You Want to Feel

Before choosing a paint swatch or a cushion cover, ask yourself: how do I want to feel in this room? Energised? Comforted? Connected? Calm? Once you know the answer, you can begin choosing colours that align with those emotional needs. Don’t be afraid to move away from the colour trends of the moment. Your home isn’t a showroom. It’s a living, breathing reflection of you.

If you’re not sure where to begin, that’s where someone like me comes in. I help guide clients through the emotional and energetic needs of their space, using colour as both a compass and a tool. Because when our homes feel right, something softens inside us. Something says: I belong here. This space supports me.

And really, isn’t that what home should be?
